How we worked out the numbers
From the extension's own colours, not guessed. It is an estimate, and every step is below.
90%
less light given off by a typical Ads Manager screen
~50%
less glare you feel (up to 65% for small bright areas)
The steps
- We took a typical Ads Manager screen as a mix of its real colours (white cards, grey page, dark text, blue buttons).
- We ran every one of those colours through the extension's own dark mapping (Midnight, 5% warm).
- We compared the light each screen gives off: 85 units before, 8.1 after. That is 90.5% less light.
- Eyes do not feel light in proportion. A standard law of perception (Stevens, exponent 0.33) turns that into how bright it feels: about 54% less. We show it rounded down to 50%.
The colour mix we used
| Part of the screen | Share | Light before → after |
|---|---|---|
| White: table, cards, panels | 55% | 1.00 → 0.02 |
| Page grey (behind the cards) | 24% | 0.89 → 0.01 |
| Light grey: table header, hover | 4% | 0.92 → 0.01 |
| Light grey: chips, buttons | 4% | 0.79 → 0.03 |
| Dark text and icons | 6% | 0.01 → 0.81 |
| Grey text | 3% | 0.14 → 0.49 |
| Blue (links, buttons) | 2% | 0.20 → 0.20 |
| Borders | 2% | 0.63 → 0.09 |
In Meta's normal look, 8 hours of work puts the screen light of 8 hours in front of your eyes. With dark mode it is about 46 min of the same light.
This is an estimate of light and brightness, not a medical claim. How tired your eyes feel also depends on your room, your breaks and your own eyes. Dark themes help most in dim light.
